Jockey Club Gold Cup Or Irish Champion Stakes Next Target For Forever Young

Japanese and American champion Forever Young will target either the GI Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park on dirt in September or the G1 Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown on turf that same month, according to connections.

Depending on which path the son of Real Steel takes, his long-term goal is either an attempt to win the GI Breeders' Cup Classic for a second time and become the second dual winner after Tiznow, or take in the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in early October. No Japanese horse has ever won the Arc, although several have come close. If he stays on dirt, Forever Young could renew his rivalry with his Dubai World Cup conqueror Magnitude (Not This Time) at Keeneland in the Classic.

The reigning Japanese Horse of the Year and dual G1 Saudi Cup winner was last seen finishing a gallant second in the G1 Dubai World Cup for trainer Yoshito Yahagi in March. Campaigned by Susumu Fujita, the 2024 GI Kentucky Derby third has earned over $31.7 million in 15 starts, but has yet to start on turf.

Yahagi Stable released the following statement on X Saturday which read: “The trainer, along with overseas racing manager Hioshi Ando, discussed the matter with owner Susumu Fujita.

“As a result, the following two options were considered: [the] September 18 GI Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park Racecourse to [the] October 31, GI Breeders' Cup Classic at Keeneland Racecourse.

“Alternatively, [the] September 12 G1 Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown Racecourse to [the] October 4 G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at ParisLongchamp Racecourse.

“These two options will be considered, and the horse's condition will be monitored to determine the best course of action.

“Furthermore, if Forever Young is in good condition, the goal is to have him race in Japan before the end of the year. Thank you for your continued support of Forever Young.”
